April 27th 2014

Every 4th Sunday in April is

Happy I Love You Day.

This year, 2014, it is April 27th.

Never heard of it, you're not alone.

Follow along for more details!

For Mom's, Mr. Mom's, Grandparents...

Mother's Day was just around the corner, and as a teacher of special needs children I did want the children to create something for their mother. However, several of the children in the class had no biological mother in their life.

Mom is in jail, kid is in foster care having been removed from the home, the mom has died through lifestyle choices or illness, you name it, and some of the kids have experienced it. With Mother's Day coming up I didn't want to upset the children who were not living with their birth mother.

The week leading up to Mother's Day I was still very adamant about ignoring the day as I was, "saving the children" from further heartache of knowing their particular mother wasn't around anymore.

My final decision was to ignore the event. Did anyone mention it wasn't fair to the children who did have a loving mother in their life? Yes, I really thought that I was helping the children -pretty naïve wouldn't you say?

Yes, this was me, Ms. Grumpy - sad sad sad

BUT THEN...

at the last minute (such as late on Thursday evening before Mother's Day) I realised I ought to do something to honor the mother figure in the lives of these children, and teach them to be thankful for the person or people who are in their life and who are taking care of them.

Happy I Love You Day was born

So when the idea came to me for Happy I Love You Day, I realized that these children have someone who loves them and cares for them, yet who is not necessarily a biological mother and this is a way to honor that person.

My mother, for example, was incapable of being a mother due to her illness. I have no doubt she loved her children, but she had many issues that left her incapacitated and unable to do the things for her children that normal mothers/caretakers do.

As an adult I've thought about how it would have been to have her healthy and normal to take care of us - our lives most certainly would be different. Yet, it didn't happen that way. Our mother loved us in her way and she was human with many frailties.

Appreciation

Many children are living with a grandparent, or just a father (Mr. Mom), some are in foster care, or they have been adopted. Some are living with an older sibling, or other relative, but most children have someone who loves and cares for them. Wish I could say all children...

Add to the mix that many adults are now taking care of their own parents, as well as taking care of children, a spouse, or taking care of a sick family member. The list is endless of what people do for others on a daily basis.

Everyone needs to be shown appreciation once in a while. Taking care of someone who cannot take care of themselves, children, spouse, or adult parents, is very taxing.

If you know of someone who takes care of others, or the person who was in your life helping to raise you to adulthood, call them on the telephone, write a handwritten letter showing appreciation, or even a text message, tell them Thank you. It's Happy I Love You Day.

Hence the day, Happy I Love You Day!

Here is to all the people who are caring for others.

HAPPY I LOVE YOU DAY!
